That Old Oak Tree
It seems like so long ago
But I can still remember then, can’t you?
We thought we were so in love
Thought our love would always see us through the darkest storm
But we sat and wondered why
Happiness just passed us by
Oh what a shame; who was to blame?
(chorus)
It’s so nice to be back home again with you
I always knew our love could make it through
It keeps growing like that old oak tree
So straight and tall forever
It’s so nice to be back home again with you
We held on tight for many a year
We shared our dreams but we hid most of our fears
Times was tough though we got by
We worked too hard
Couldn’t find much time to grow
When we grew we grew apart or so it seemed
We lacked the honesty to tell for sure
When we met you were still a bud
Waiting for those warm spring rains
To burst the scales that held you in so tight
I played the leaf all dried and torn
Hanging on through winter storms
Until the end you were still my friend
Then spring came and that leaf fell
Revealed the bud that always was beneath
A new life sleeping
Now we’ll share that branch; we’ll share the tree
We’ll grow and grow toward eternity until we touch the sky
I could never admit that I needed you
Thought that I could grow without the tree that nurtured me
Now I know more; pain teaches well
We are separate buds but we need each other still
Is it His will?
