Spirit Voices
I thought I heard the voices deep inside my head
Calling quiet ‘cross the years of memories long dead
But as I listened ever close, much to my surprise
Those voices told of things to come and doorways open wide
Although each voice was not my own I came to recognize
That each one held a bit of soul long lost behind these eyes
Like spirit sparks that whisper on against the coldest wind
To light the path in darkest night until the day begins
I wish I knew what I once knew when we were very young
When life was more than just a game though the times we had were fun
Even now we laugh a lot except the joke has changed
Some seeds we planted never grew and dreams got rearranged
I know we can’t go home again no matter what the cost
The road back leads not to the past nor to those things we lost
Mistakes we make are not unmade by simply planting over
Old memories are always new; they grow to fit the story
But I shall tend this tale to cultivate the fairest flower true
I’ll water in the nourishment that came to me from you
And may the glow of souls a-shining, given always free
Expand to fill the universe with boundless energy
