Holy Modal One Man Choir
Is that a six string or a eight string?
One of his voices called out to me
Whatever it is—we had us one just like it
When we was just crazy kids
Back then the right hand still knew
Most everything the left hand would do
And that one guy in charge could still sing like a rock star
While the rest of us in here would harmonize
(chorus)
And we’d play the streets for money (just like you)
And though them streets weren’t paved with gold
The tips they was overflowing
And no one ever stole our jar
And we’d sing it for the song
We could belt it out all day long
And the name we did acquire
Was the Holy Modal One Man Choir
The Holy Modal One Man Choir
Now I’d met this guy before
In a thousand different forms
But every time we meet—no matter when or where
Each story ends much the same
When his haunting ancient eyes
Find that kindred soul in mine
At first I think he sees the crazy man in me
But then I know he only sees his selves
Thomas Hubbard (7/7/2008)
The Holy Modal One Man Choir was recorded live and uncut in the living room on an Olympus LS-10. Just me and a guitar about 2 feet away from the mic with levels set on automatic.
