Path of the Ancients
Will I walk the path of the Ancients
On bedrock worn so smooth
By the journey of so many spirits
And the turning of the wheel?
Yet old is new and new is old
With each turning of the wheel
Each spoke leads back to center
Then springs forth afresh and anew
Will I walk the path of the Ancients
‘Cross meadows unmarked by time
Through flowered fields so fragrant
Awash with morning dew?
Run–gather in my arms
All the beauty my heart can hold
For I shall pass this way but once
Though I’ve walked this path before
The little bird did tell me
You were here when it all began
While this life is but a moment
You’ll live forevermore
So when Death sneaks up behind me
With no fear nor false surprise
I will welcome the comfort of darkness
And return unto earth once more
Sweet Mother folds me to her bosom
Sky Father bids me farewell
As I sing to the four directions
Rest well for the trip without end
For old is new and new is old
With each turning of the wheel
Each spoke leads back to center
Then springs forth afresh and anew
Then I’ll walk the path of the Ancients
‘Cross meadows unmarked by time
Through flowered fields so fragrant
Awash with morning dew
‘Til I walk the path of the Ancients
On bedrock worn so smooth
By the journey of so many spirits
And the turning of the wheel
